To the moon…. In the metaverse
🕹️ Baseball player turned artist Micah Johnson inspires the next generation with his metaverse stories
This week the Akutars enter the metaverse when their first collection mints on April 22nd, equipped with brand name supporters and partnerships. Akutars are part of Aku’s story, a Web3 character who stars in unique video clip chapters sold on the NFT marketplace. Wait, who is Aku? Micah Johnson, a baseball player turned artist, is the creator behind the digital astronaut character. Aku was inspired by a conversation Johnson overheard between a mother and a child, in which the child asked if astronauts could be black. Johnson has been focused on making Web3 more accessible and inclusive for everyone, and has used Aku as a way to do it.
“Aku is the first and only one making art and building a community at the highest level of fashion and culture,” Pusha-T said in an official release. “The first Akutar lineup is a family affair of Black creatives coming together to take the Akuverse to the next level.”
So far, Johnson’s art has created a strong community, as well as over $10 million in sales. With the first NFT film deal and TV deal in history, this is just the beginning of what we’ll see from Johnson and the Akuverse.
Some security in the NFT world
👁🗨 Crypto Tech Alliance moves the market away from rug pulls
The team behind a play-to-earn game CryptoFighters Alliance is disrupting the status quo with a ERC-721R token standard, which guarantees a refund in the case that a purchase is not delivered. Much of the skepticism towards the crypto and NFT space comes from the horror stories of NFT scams and rug pulls. This standard, which allows buyers to get their money back, may offer cushioning for NFT collectors for a deal gone wrong. It would incentivize creators to set clear expectations with their potential buyers up front: is this art, a long-term project, or a short-term engagement? If adopted, standards like ERC-721R could signal a more mature Web3 market. Only time will tell.
🍨 Sweet Scoop: Smart Contracts
You might have heard of “smart contract” in reference to Web3. Let’s take a deeper dive. A smart contract is a computer program that automatically executes once certain conditions are met. Think of it as a contract that, instead of being enforced by parties who sign, is enforced by a few lines of computer code. The objective of a smart contract is to simplify and standardize an agreement between the parties, without a middleman. Why are they important? A smart contract is the “little engine that could” that enables developers to build a variety of applications and/or tokens. It is the engine behind the NFTs (bored apes) and even 1Wallet! As a smart contract wallet, it can do many things a traditional wallet couldn’t do: social recovery of funds, automatically track tokens (ERC/HRC-20, 721, 1155), notification of suspicious activities, automatically interact with other smart contracts, and a lot more. So, do you feel smarter now?

Fashion, music, and dust for breakfast in 100-degree weather? Sounds like quite a weekend! Coachella 2022 did not disappoint. From the surprise, Justin Bieber performance and Megan Thee Stallion debuting a new song to Doja Cat’s insanely fast outfit changes, this year’s Coachella made a heated comeback after the festival’s 2-year hiatus. Fashion ranged from disco cowgirl to bold bohemian, and there were enough pop culture moments to keep Coachella trending on Twitter for the next month.
One of our team’s favorite integrations this year was the Coachella Bloom NFTs, which were given to all ticket holders and provided exclusive perks around the festival. We are so pumped to see Coachella’s interest in Web3 and can’t wait to see what they cook up next year!
